11 Essentials Apps Professional Travel Photographers Use Before, During, and After a Shoot

Travel photography is just as dependent on planning and timing as it is on light, and selecting the right cameras and lenses. Booking the trip, packing your gear, and arriving at your destination are only the beginning; editing, file security, processing speed, and location planning are what determine whether those images actually survive the trip and make it out of your camera roll.

This is where the right apps matter. The tools below cover sun-path tracking, location scouting, editing, backups, and workflow control - the practical layer that turns rushed shoots and tight light windows into usable, deliverable work. Each app earns its place through real use on the road, not novelty.

As a full-time travel photographer, these are the apps I rely on daily to keep trips organized, images protected, and decisions efficient when time, light, and connectivity are working against you.

Travel Planning Tools

Sometimes it takes a little more planning to get the right shot at the right time. That can be challenging in a different country where things don’t quite run as smoothly as at home. Here are the top apps to use before you can get the shot.

1. The Photographer's Ephemeris (TPE)

Cost: Free

Photographer's Ephemeris is an excellent tool for outdoor photography, as it helps you track the movement of the sun and other natural light sources. Its map interface makes planning trips days ahead easier, with minute-by-minute updates.

Choose between 2D and 3D views to better imagine your vision. With iOS, you can use augmented reality (AR) to scout the area and see exactly where the sun, moon, and Milky Way will be positioned with a functional overlay.

2. Maps.me

Cost: Free

Google Maps and Apple Maps work well in most places with a stable connection, as well as in very popular travel destinations. But what about places like Havana, Cuba, which is notorious for its bad internet connections, or when you’re shuffling through the dunes and deserts of Egypt?

In those cases, Maps.me is your best friend. Besides downloading multiple maps even when not in the chosen country, you can also pin locations, get hiking trail details, and find hotels and restaurants easily.

3. PhotoPills

Cost: Free (Paid version offers more features)

PhotoPills builds on the basic structure of The Photographer's Ephemeris and elevates it by offering more detailed information about Depth of Field (DoF) and natural forecasts. It also offers offline global use by caching locations, making it easier to save points of interest than TPE.

4. Weather Underground

Cost: Free

Don’t underestimate the power of a quality weather app. Nothing ruins a shot faster than a sudden downpour just as you’ve set up all of your equipment.

Thankfully, you don’t have to wonder anymore. Thanks to the precision of Weather Underground, you can monitor everything from sunsets to dew points by the hour, not just the day. Its handy map feature also lets you plan your trip better, so you can zoom in on nearby areas when scouting for your perfect photo spot.

5. WonderConnect

Cost: Free (In-app purchases)

It’s all fine and well having these apps ready to go, but they're not very helpful if you don’t have a stable connection. Getting a local SIM at each destination is a hassle, and international roaming fees can rack up fast.

The modern solution to this common problem is an eSIM. I use the WonderConnect travel eSIM, which lets you buy a prepaid data plan before you leave. They also offer a reliable connection to nearly 200 countries. Even if your carrier includes some roaming allowance, having an eSIM as a backup means you’re covered once you’ve used it up.

Photo Editing

Once you’ve snagged the perfect shot and packed up your travel photography gear, it’s time to transport it to editing. These apps are the best for a traveller on the go who doesn’t have time to sit down at a laptop for touch-ups.

6. Adobe Lightroom

Cost: Free (Paid version offers more features)

Adobe is well-known among creatives for its powerful tools. So, it’s no surprise that it’s a favorite among travel photographers as well.

This is a more advanced editing tool that goes beyond changing your images from black and white to sepia. It offers features such as split toning, picture sharpening, and the ability to remove unwanted images.

7. Snapseed

Cost: Free

Snapseed is a great tool for intermediate editors who want to do what Adobe Lightroom allows, but in a more efficient, easier-to-use way. It allows you to optimise image quality easily, do color grading, add filters, and remove unwanted images (or people).

8. VSCO

Cost: Free (Paid version offers more features)

VSCO is popular among photographers who post their images on social platforms. Its easy sharing features allow you to share your images directly from the app to Instagram, Facebook, or your VSCO profile.

It offers a free plan with basic image editing tools, including presets and film effects. Its paid versions offer you more control not only with photo editing tools but also with video editing tools. It also offers an AI Lab, which can further elevate shots with full-resolution control and text prompts.

9. ProCamera

Cost: Free (Paid version offers more features)

ProCamera allows you take high-quality photos and videos with your phone camera that come very close to professional shots. While it doesn’t have Lightroom's full capabilities, it is a close competitor.

This app has travel-friendly features ideal for travel photographers, like anti-shake and perspective correction to keep your shots centered. It also allows offline editing, which is essential when work needs to get done but Wi-Fi is spotty.

Photo Organization

So, you’ve gotten the best travel camera to get the perfect shot, and you’ve edited the photos. But, where can you securely store the digital images?

10. WeTransfer

Cost: Free (Paid version offers more features)

Transferring large images or videos on mobile often corrupts them or reduces their resolution, harming photo quality, but not with WeTransfer.

This free app allows you to transfer large files up to 3GB without losing resolution. While you can send a few files without signing up or paying, it is limited to only 10 transfers per month and stores them for only 3 days. If you need more shares, you’ll have to get the paid version, which allows you to send up to 300 GB and password-protect projects.

11. Dropbox

Cost: Free (Paid version offers more features)

Hard drives are great for backups, but aren’t ideal for someone constantly moving between planes and cars across the globe. A cloud storage app like Dropbox is a good alternative for a photographer on the move and often switches between devices.

Its basic free plan offers about 2 GB of storage. Anything above that will need to be paid. Still, the free plan offers many useful features, including the ability to transfer files up to 50 GB, edit PDFs, and add digital signatures.
